Learning Management System (LMS) software is a top desirable for EHS leaders in 2019, and it’s clear why. Monitoring worker safety training and effectiveness is a crucial leading indicator.
As a result, Pro-Sapien has partnered with ELEARNINGFORCE International (EFI). We now offer EFI’s LMS365 as an integrated Learning Management module.
Like all Pro-Sapien’s software, the new Learning Management module is deployed on Office 365 for easy access and use.

EHS software and LMS software go hand in hand. In this blog post, we’ll find out the uses of LMS software and how it works for EHS training and leading indicators.
Let’s get started!
What is Learning Management System Software?
In brief, LMS software manages educational and training resources, allowing users to work remotely at their own pace.
The first example of LMS is an advertisement the Boston Gazette ran in 1728 for a shorthand course taught over mail correspondence.
However, with the dawn of Internet and computer devices, LMS software improved rapidly. Today, the marketplace is growing. In fact, the global LMS software market's expected worth is $22.4 billion USD by 2023 – up from $9.2 billion USD in 2018.
Cloud-based LMS software has the highest estimated growth. Alongside ease of accessibility, features include enhanced security, faster deployment and lower set up costs. Essentially, LMS software is a cost-effective training solution.
Mette Olesen, Marketing and Communications Manager at LMS365, the leading vendor of LMS software on Office 365, said:
“Customers implementing cloud-based LMS software support their green profile by significantly cutting down overhead costs and CO2 emissions."
"With our recent Microsoft Teams integration, learners can access training without leaving Teams. Collocating training with relevant communication brings training to a whole new level.”
In addition, integrating LMS software with existing software benefits user adoption and reduces risk.
Blue Water Shipping, an LMS365 client in the logistics industry, found “no better platform for communication, collaboration and learning. We did not want to deploy and maintain yet another service to train the workforce on.”
What is LMS software used for?
In general, LMS software is used for educational purposes, and employee training. (If you like stats, you will enjoy this section.)
Employee Training
LMS software is an efficient and cost effective method of training employees. Staff sign in to the LMS software with their own device, then work at their own pace. Furthermore, customizable learning courses ensure employees are on the same page. In other words, using LMS software for EHS training is ideal.
Employee Orientation
LMS software gets new recruits up to speed, and acquires them skills to become an efficient team member. In addition, a study by IBM found 62% of new employees stay in a role with training opportunities. However, when no training is provided, a mere 21% of new starts intend to stay. In other words, a trained employee is a happy employee!
Knowledge Retention
A massive 50% of workers forget what they just learned within an hour. In a day, it’s 70%. A year? 90%.
Luckily, LMS software combats these numbers. Interactive learning increases engagement and knowledge retention. Also, you can refresh learners’ memories with quizzes!
Education
Educational facilities commonly use LMS software. As a result, blended training – the combination of software-based and traditional teaching methods - accounts for 70% of LMS software use.
How does LMS software work?
LMS software hosts a range of learning content, including video, interactive courses, and documents. Moreover, you can build your own courses, or pick from the huge selection of pre-made training packages by content vendors.
Training packages arrive in various embedding strategies, such as ‘Tin Can’ and Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM).
As SCORM's name suggests, it creates shareable content. Plus, it is considered 'best of breed'. As SCORM content uses existing specifications, it is reusable in different systems without modification.
On the other hand, ‘Tin Can’ is a boosted SCORM. It tracks behaviours occurring outside the LMS software.
To clarify, both strategies are ideal for large organizations implementing staff training. For example, the US Department of Defense specifies all LMS software content must be in SCORM or ‘Tin Can’ formats.
The benefits of LMS software for EHS training
As you’ve probably gathered, LMS software is beneficial in EHS. Here's why:
- Platform for EHS training
- Helps create positive safety culture
- Configurable course content
- Track workers' progress and set reminders
- Integration with existing company software
- Provides EHS leading indicators
EHS Training is a Leading Indicator
Leading indicators highlight issues before they become an incident. A major leading indicator is staff participation in EHS training.
LMS software tracks worker training, and therefore, prevents accidents caused by missed training.
For example, five workers have expired Lockout/Tagout certificates. According to the LMS software dashboard, unfulfilled training is a contributing factor to machinery-related incidents.
Use the leading indicator of EHS training participation to move from reactive to proactive .
Likewise, training effectiveness is a leading indicator. With LMS software, EHS professionals set training expiration dates, use automated deadline reminders, track learner training status and intervene where necessary (like you did, you proactive Safety Manager, you!).
HSEQ Innovate and LMS365 Partnership
Pro-Sapien has partnered with EFI’s LMS365 to deliver a brand new Learning Management module. Our HSEQ Innovate EHS platform and LMS365 are both based on Office 365 – so it simply made sense for us to team up!
Murray Ferguson, Commercial Director at Pro-Sapien, commented:
“Training is a cornerstone of EHS and we are delighted to now offer clients an excellent management solution.
“We partnered with LMS365 to give companies an award-winning training system whilst maintaining Pro-Sapien's seamless Office 365 integration.”
In conclusion, LMS software is becoming an EHS “must have”, potentially increasing workplace safety.
