Pro-Sapien conducts research into hazard observations engagement

11 Aug 2016 · Glasgow, UK

Throughout July and the beginning of August, Pro-Sapien Software Ltd., leading providers of EHSQ software on Microsoft SharePoint, conducted research into the practice of hazard observations across a range of industries. Findings are comprised of a small sample of respondents (n=51) within the EHSQ profession around the world.

The aim was to understand more about individual organizations’ approaches to hazard observations, as despite being one of the most useful leading indicators, management can struggle to bring workers entirely on-board with the initiative.

The predominantly qualitative study’s main findings were:

  1. Hazard observation is a practice that varies from organization to organization, confirming widespread opinion already established within the EHSQ community.
  2. The majority of respondents had faced challenges in encouraging workers to report their observations (78%).
  3. Research questions also asked about the strategies for combating these challenges, which revealed that 55% of respondents have observation targets for workers to meet; however, only 33% have incentives in place for reaching them.

These topics are discussed among other issues that surfaced in an article published by Pro-Sapien on August 11 2016.

Steve Hunter, part of the team that ran the study at Pro-Sapien, commented:

“Although a small sample, this research has allowed us to learn more about the day-to-day challenges in EHS first-hand from those who face them. We already know that workforce engagement can be an issue, but hopefully these findings contribute to discovering solutions or new approaches by way of sharing with an audience the specific experiences of similarly positioned individuals. If at least, this research will help Pro-Sapien tailor its services and software to be the best help possible to EHS professionals facing these problems.”

The National Safety Council has been approached with the findings, with the Director of EHS&S John Dony issuing comments on the topics raised. His insightful contribution is due to be published as an article week beginning 15 Aug 2016.

In light of this research Pro-Sapien is holding two Hazard Observations software demonstrations on 24 and 25 August 2016. The free demos will show audiences how SharePoint can be utilized to capture, manage and analyze hazard observations with an intuitive, familiar user interface throughout.
